We are excited to begin introducing our new members in the coming weeks! There was a lot of interest in the team this year, and the project leaders have been working hard to organize our 30 new members. Keep an eye on our “Team” page this month to meet our new project teams.
Financing a Baja SAE team presents a huge, non-technical, challenge for engineering students. Baja SAE teams are expensive to run, our projected cost this year is over $21,000. Though this number is large, it is distributed over BCIT Racing’s 40 members this year, bringing costs down to approximately $525 per student per year, a very reasonable investment. Part of this challenge is finding companies willing to support student teams financially.
Abbye, our Media Manager, has been awesome, making BCIT Racing’s brand looking professional very presentable. Sanesh, our Engineering Manager, drafted and sent emails out to potential sponsors last week, and we have already received a few replies!
We would like to thank the following organizations for their sponsorship of BCIT Racing:
A special thank you to Fluor Canada and NSK Bearings, as both are returning industry sponsors for this season. Your long-term commitment to BCIT Racing is very appreciated.
Thank you to all of our sponsors for supporting BCIT Racing, and investing in future engineers and technologists. We look forward to working with all of you on our projects in the coming year as well as well into the future!
If any readers of this post feel they can contribute to BCIT Racing, please email us at BCITRacing@gmail.com, or contact us through our website.
Today was a big day for the team! It was registration day! This meant the team members were up before the sun, crowded in front of computers, waiting for the all important register button to appear.
And while we were waiting, we knew there were at least one hundred other teams doing the same thing as us. No one said this, but I’m sure we all wondered if we would get to register. Or if we would end up being wait listed, and have to wait for another team to drop out.
The registration time came… and nothing. One minute went by, then two minutes. Suddenly, I saw the button we had all been waiting for! I yelled with excitement! This caused everyone to join me by my computer. We started to go through the simple steps of registration, all the while Sanesh was giving Jeff a play-by-play via conference call. Finally, we saw the message on my screen:
On October 5th, BCIT Racing’s Team Captain, Jeff Meiklejohn, and Engineering Manager, Sanesh Iyer, were invited to present at SAE BC’s annual Student Night. This event is held annually to give SAE Collegiate Design Series competitors in BC an opportunity to network with each other and SAE BC’s board. SAE BC’s board is the body responsible for awarding SAE student team awards in British Columbia.
It was expected that many presentations were going to be largely technical, so Jeff and Sanesh decided to take a different approach, and present mostly about our teams experience in our inaugural 2015 season as well as our plans for our 2016 season. We felt we were successful using this strategy, as it appeared to engage our audience and demonstrate our commitment to the longevity of BCIT Racing.
BCIT Racing would like to thank SAE BC for organizing this student event! The SAE BC Student Night was lots of fun for BCIT Racing’s members who attended, Jeff, Matt, Saf, and Sanesh. We got to meet members of other SAE teams, and discuss technical and non-technical issues – everything from gearbox design through sponsor management – and proved an invaluable learning opportunity. Talking with the SAE BC board was also enlightening, as they offered lots of advice relating to team and project management, as well as financial and information resources.
